Turk Road is a mysterious little gravel road into the forest near Echo Lake. In February I took the road a ways into the woods, stopped the car and turned off the engine. The snow had begun to fall steadily and the world was utterly silent. I sat in the comfort of my car, the window rolled down, and gazed into the magical emptiness. A movement caught my eye and I realized I was not alone after all. Snowbirds. Two sitting among the pale oh-so-reluctant-to-let-go leaves of an American Beech tree, and further back three more on the ground.
